The whisky made at this Speyside distillery was chiefly used in blends in the past, but has now released  both 10-Year and "Cask Strength" labels.  Mahón Gin is a juniper-foward, grape-based gin made on the island on Menorca, back to when it was still a British colony. -Alessio Vermouths-

Tempus Fugit Spirits wants to "source and recreate rare spirits and liqueurs from the pages of history to satisfy the demands of the most discerning connoisseur." As such, their Alessio vermouths are based on 19th-century recipes, when vermouth was meant to be drank on its own and not just used as a cocktail mixer. Their four vermouths, (Bianco, di Torino Rosso, Chinato, and Vino Chianto) are wine-based and contain dozens of herbs, roots, and spices to give them layers of complexity beyond what one may expect from the "usual" vermouth. Come to the store this Saturday, July 30th, to sample a few.*

-Martinique Rhum Agricole (JM Rhum & Clément)-

Martinique Rhum Agricole is an 'AOC' - a protected designation of origin - and the rums produced here must meet certain production standards in order to be labeled as a Martinique Rhum Agricole. Rhum agricole, unlike most rums, is made from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice. The tropical heat and humidity encourages the growth of wild yeast, so fermentation begins soon after harvest. These wild yeasts, among other things, contribute to rhum agricole’s unique flavor (described as “earthy” and/or “grassy”). Stop by the store this Saturday July 2nd, from 1-4PM, to sample a variety of “rhums” from both JM Rhum and Clément - blanc to vieux (aged), plus a Creole Shrub (a spiced, orange liqueur made from Rhum Clément)*.

-Ballast Point Brewing Co.-

Coming from San Diego, Ballast Point, like so many other craft-brews, started as a hobby but grew into something more - much more. Beer is mostly water, and the hardness of the water (the level of dissolved minerals) helps determine how the beer tastes. The water in San Diego generally has a higher amount of sulphate than chloride, which (chemically-speaking) creates a much better-tasting, hop-forward beer - hence so many great IPAs coming out of the San Diego area. Ballast Point will be at the storethis Friday, from 4-7 PM, pouring samples of their "hop-forward" Sculpin IPAs (classic AND grapefruit), and their Even Keel Session IPA - plus Yellowtail (Kolsch), and Longfin Lager,  .

Gran Classico is an Italian-style bitter aperitif made from a maceration of a mixture of 25 aromatic herbs and roots, Kina L’Aero D’Or is a French-style aperitif made from the Piedmont-grown Cortese grape and infused with Cinchona bark (which produces quinine, the principal bitter taste) and other spices, while Fernet Angelico, like all good digestifs, will help calm your stomach after a heavy meal. -Singani 63-

While the Peruvians and Argentinians argue over who "owns" pisco, singnai is strictly Bolivian. Similar to pisco, and grappa, singani is a pomace brandy, but made from Muscat of Alexandria grapes. While filming his biopic Che, filmmaker Steven Soderbergh was introduced to Bolivia’s national drink, and brings it to the states as “Singani 63.” Stop by Cask on College from 1-4 PM on Saturday, October 10th to try Bolivia’s national drink!

Location: Cask at 3185 College Avenue.

-Spirit Works Distillery-

Spirit Works Distillery is located in Sebastopol, CA. Using California-grown Hard Red Winter Wheat, also known as “Dark Northern Spring” (usually reserved for making bread), they make their base spirit: a vodka. To that base spirit, they add juniper berries and other botanicals to create their Gin. They then rest some Gin in new American White Oak barrels (usually reserved for making whiskey) to create a Barrel-Aged Gin; or they macerate the gin with sloe berries to create their Sloe Gin. Stop by Cask on College in Berkeley from 4-7 PM on Friday, October 2nd to sample all of these gins.

Location: Cask at 3185 College Avenue.
Time: 4:00 pm to 7pm.

-Eel River Brewing Company-

The Eel River Brewing Company is coming to Cask on College in Berkeley this Saturday from 1-4 PM. Time: 1:00 pm to 4pm.
Date: Saturday, September 26th

-Drake's Brewing Company-

San Leandro’s own Drake’s Brewing Company will be sampling three beers this weekend at Cask on College. Drake’s 1500 is their expression of a dry-hopped American Pale Ale. The Black Robusto Porter is heavier (in body and color) than your typical porter, and brewed with Willamette hops. Last, but not least, the Aroma Coma is an American-style IPA brewed with five different hops (Citra, Cascade, Chinook, El Dorado, and Amarillo), and double dry-hopped to increase the intensity of the hop aromas in this particular beer.

Location: Cask at 3185 College Avenue.
Time: 4:00 pm to 7pm.
Date: Friday, September 18th

-Colorado Gold, Kilchoman-

Also this week at Cask on College in Berkeley, Shane from JVS Imports will be pouring three whiskies. Colorado Gold Bourbon is a four-grain bourbon, but what's notable is that this is a straight bourbon, meaning it is aged for a minimum of 2 years in new, charred white American oak (a rarity in the craft whiskey world). The rye, with a 95% rye mash bill, is only aged for a year in new oak, but “aging” is sped up with “honeycomb staves” - designed to increase the surface area in which the whiskey interacts, giving this rye flavors similar to a whiskey that’s been sitting in the barrel for a longer period of time. Finally, don’t let the name of the Kilchoman 100% Islay fool you, it is the least-peated of the Kilchoman range - so don’t expect a "peat bomb." However, this release (the 5th) is the most mature expression of the "100% Islay" releases. Come in and sample all three this Saturday at Cask on College Ave. in Berkeley.

Location: Cask at 3185 College Avenue.
Time: 1:00 pm to 4pm.
Date: Saturday, September 19th

-Lost Republic Bourbon-

Celebrate National Bourbon Heritage Month this Thursday, September 10th, at Cask on College Ave. in Berkeley for a special Thursday tasting of California’s own Lost Republic Bourbon. Sourced from distilleries in Indiana, Tennessee, and California, winemaker and master distiller/blender Matt Weese blends the raw spirits into a blend of 75% corn, 21% rye and 4% barley. This raw spirit becomes bourbon as it ages in new, charred American White oak barrels in Napa warehouses.

Location: Cask at 3185 College Avenue.
Time: 4:00 pm to 7pm.
Date: Thursday, September 10th

-Spider Chase Red Blend-

This blend of organically-grown Cab, Cab Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, comes from the Waterhorse Ridge Vineyard, a 2-acre vineyard on the Pacific Coast in Sonoma. The higher elevation (1,400 feet) and cooler coastal climate make this California Red Blend unique, but definitely worth trying.

Location: Cask at 3185 College Avenue.
Time: 4:00 pm to 7pm.
Date: Friday, September 11th

-Hanson Vodkas-

Vodka is traditionally made from whatever is most widely available (and fermentable). Therefore, it’s no surprise that this California vodka is distilled from grapes. While all vodkas are distilled to the same proof (190 - regardless of the method of distillation), filtration is the key to truly refining a vodka, and the Hanson vodkas are filtered seven times before bottling. Also notable, the flavored expressions are made with organic infusions, too; we’ll be pouring the original, ginger, and espresso vodkas.

Location: Cask at 3185 College Avenue.
Time: 1:00 pm to 4pm.
Date: Saturday, September 12th

-Westland Single Malts-

Start your happy hour early this Friday with some unique whiskeys from Seattle’s Westland distillery. If you’ve been curious about American single malts, this is a great place to start. Their flagship whiskey boasts five different malts in the grain bill, including Munich, Pale, and Brown, and is aged for a minimum of two years. The West Sherrywood finish has a slightly different grain bill and is aged for a minimum of 26 months in a combination of ex-Oloroso and PX sherry casks, as well as ex-bourbon barrels. This is a perfect after dinner whiskey, rich with just a bit of sweetness on the finish. If you’re looking for smoke, they have a peated single malt as well. Something for everyone!

Location: Cask at 3185 College Avenue.
Time: 4:30 pm to 7pm.
Date: Friday, June 26

-Bender's Rye-

And now for something a little different. A rye whiskey distilled and aged in Alberta, Canada, but produced locally on Treasure Island by Bay Area’s own Carl Bender. Bender’s 7 year Rye is a blend of 9 year old rye and 13 year old corn whiskey, combined with CA sourced water from the Hetch Hetchy and the Highwood river. With a hefty 92% rye in the mashbill and a slightly higher proof (48% abv), this whiskey has plenty of spice up front and stands up well in a Manhattan or Old Fashioned.

Location: Cask at 3185 College Avenue.
Time: 1pm to 4pm.
Date: Saturday, June 27

Fee: No Charge

Caledonia Spirits

If you haven’t heard the buzz about Caledonia Spirits yet, you’ll get the chance to learn about this unique Vermont distillery on Friday. Having a deep connection to the land also requires a close with relationship with the locals -- in this case, the local honeybees. Located on the banks of the Lamoille River, they craft both their Barr Hill vodka and gin using raw honey, creating lovely depth and texture. We’ll be pouring their vodka, gin, and Tom Cat gin, aged in oak barrels.

Location: Cask at 3185 College Avenue.
Time: 4pm to 7pm.
Date: Friday, May 29.

Four Roses Kentucky Bourbon

Founded in the late 1800’s, this is one Kentucky bourbon that seems to have slipped off the whiskey radar for many. That probably has a lot to do with the fact that despite being America’s best selling bourbon in the 1950’s, it was pulled from the US market by Seagrams, only to reappear almost 40 years later. It continued to flourish in Japan and Europe during this time. Luckily, in 2004, the new owners (Kirin, one of Japan’s largest breweries) returned it to the US market. Master distiller Jim Rutledge has been producing some great bourbons at Four Roses since 1995. If you love bourbon, but haven’t sampled their wares, you can correct this oversight on Saturday.

Location: Cask at 3185 College Avenue.
Time: 1pm to 4pm.
Date: Saturday, May 30.

Rum, Pisco and Mezcal

Our Friday tasting this week is a collection of Mexican and south American spirits, with a Venezuelan rum, Peruvian pisco and some mezcal.

Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa rum uses sugar cane as its base and is aged in a solera system, a highly unusual means of aging spirits. The solera was first used by Sherry producers to create their incredibly complex and varied range of delicious wines. Under this system, every year fresh distillate (or wine in the case of sherry) is added to barrels that already have spirit aging inside them. These crianzas are refilled year after year, never totally emptying, so that the rum inside is a blend of very old, middle aged and very young spirit.

San Juan del Rio

San Juan Del Rio Mezcal is one of our favorite inexpensive mezcals. Making mezcal is a difficult, time-consuming and expensive thing to do, so finding bottles of good quality for under $50 can be a challenge. San Juan Del Rio is priced at $41 and has a rich agave fruit flavor with a nice layer of smoke on top.

Capurro Pisco

We have an extra special surprise for this tasting, as Romina Puente-Arnao, the fifth generation of the Capurro family in pisco production and President of the brand, will be joining us. The Capurro family have been producing pisco for more than 100 years and have played an integral role in the development of Perú’s national spirit.
Pisco is a brandy made from high quality wine. It is the traditional spirit of Peru and Chile, although they seem unable to agree on who invented it. It is said to have been the first spirit widely available in San Francisco, as traders took it from the people they met further south and sold it to thirsty Californians. It has therefore had a long association with San Francisco and, in recent years, the popularity of Peruvian food has helped to boost sales of this aromatic spirit. The Pisco sour is probably the most common way it is served, but such an aromatic spirit deserves to be enjoyed neat.

Capurro Pisco is made from hand harvested single estate grapes, gently pressed a single time, naturally fermented into wine, copper pot distilled once to proof by varietal, & rested and blended according to family tradition. It is never diluted and there are never any additives of any kind at any step of the process.

Root, Sage, Rhubarb and Snap

Art in the Age

Operating out of LA, Art in the Age make liqueurs that are a little sweet and a little unusual. Root beer was the inspiration for one of their most popular creations. If you have studied the history of the temperance movement you might know that Root beer was once lightly alcoholic. Art in the Age have put the alcohol back and then distilled it down for good measure. We will also be pouring Art in the Age's ginger, sage and rhubarb liqueurs.

Artisanal Beer

Artisan Distributing is synonymous with craftsmanship in the beer world and they represent many small and highly sought after breweries.  They will be at Cask on College this Saturday, pouring three exceptional beers from three different breweries.  The roll-call will include Midnight Sun's Sockeye Red IPA from Alaska, Off Color's Apex Predator Farmhouse Ale from Illinois and Evil Twin's Femme Fatale Kabosu 100% Bret IPA with Japanese citrus from New York.  Don't miss this special opportunity!

Time: 1pm to 4pm

Date: 5 2 2015

Napa Wine

We don't often do wine tastings because it is a little difficult to find winery representatives who have time to come into the city and pour for us. So we were very happy when Tom Rees of Pine & Brown said he would make himself available. Tom purchases his fruit from some of Napa's finest vineyards and takes great pride in how he makes his wine. Citrus fruits abound in his Sauvignon Blanc while his Cabernet is typically Napa. Big boned and plummy with notes of black currant and mocha and ripe tannins.

Amate Amaro?

Amaro is an Italian liqueur that is as bittersweet as rain on a Sunday in California. Traditionally taken neat as a digestif or medicine, it is becoming relatively popular as a cocktail alternative to bitter-sweet liqueurs like Campari or Vermouth. The emergence of fernet as a favorite Bay Area tipple has helped to fuel interest in amaro, which is in the same family but tends to be a little more sweet and approachable than fernet.
Its bitterness is harnessed by the maceration of herbs, roots, flowers, citrus peels and bark in alcohol. Sweetness, or balance, is usually achieved by adding sugar syrup, but sometimes honey or other sweeteners are used. For this dalliance with Italian culture, we will be sampling Amaro Montenegro, Amaro Lucano and Amaro Santa Maria Al Monte, three of the most popular Amari in the US.

Date: 4.30.2015
Time: 4pm to 7pm

A bit of this, a little of that

For our first tasting this week we are going to do something a little strange. We are pouring a Scotch, an Italian liqueur and a Peruvian Pisco. There is not much that combines this eclectic grouping, other than that we really like drinking them. The Scotch is Glenfarclas 12, an underrated gem of the whisky world. Glenfarclas is a Speyside malt with the creaminess and soft sweetness that characterizes that region.
The Italian liqueur is Dimmi, and it was invented by Stefano Turrini who now lives in the Bay Area. Stefano is a regular visitor to Cask and a man of many talents. His liqueur is one of those things that took us entirely by surprise, but in a pleasant way. Many of our bars (Bourbon and Branch et al) have begun using it as it lends a unique and delicious taste to mixed drinks. The base distillate is made from organic Italian wheat and infused with an absinthe recipe first used in the 1930s. Added to this are liquorice, vanilla, rhubarb, ginseng and orange peel.  Once all that is done, Stefano takes the infused spirit and adds peach and apricot flower blossom and nebbiolo grappa. Organic beet sugar is used to add a little sweetness. It is even more delightful than it sounds.
Lastly we will have some Encanto Quebranta Pisco. This spirit has a long history in the Bay Area. It was the first spirit widely available here as traders stole it from the people they met in South America and sold it to early Californian migrants. Made entirely from grapes, Pisco is essentially a brandy. Unlike many European brandies, Encanto is made from a high quality wine. It is highly aromatic, giving notes of rose petals and tropical fruits on the nose and a sweet nougat palate.

Bourbon and Rye

Colorado has produced some fine whiskey in recent years. Stranahan's is probably the best known, but other excellent examples include Peach St and Breckenridge. Over the past 12 months or so, we have also been impressed with Colorado Gold, who produce a rye and a bourbon. As best we understand it, they are making their own whiskey and mixing it with whiskey they source from other distilleries. The bourbon has a rich and pleasant chocolate and tropical fruit nose with burnt sugar on the palate and a long chewy fruit finish. The rye tends to vary from batch to batch but often has a strong dill quality that mixes nicely with the rye spice and soft sweet undertones.
Location: Cask at 3185 College Avenue, Berkeley.
Time: 4pm to 7pm.

Scotch Gordon & MacPhail

Gordon & MacPhail are one of the longest running and most highly regarded Scotch bottling companies in the world. They buy some of the best whisky Scotland has to offer, and release it in all its glory at various age statements that are not typically available direct from the distillery. We will be showcasing Mortlach 15, Benromach Golden Promise and Glen Grant 10.
Mortlach is one of our favorite Speyside expressions.  It is rich and malty with a baker’s chocolate profile on the mid-palate and a slightly herbaceous and peppery finish. Benromach is another Speyside, but with a much earthier flavor than the Mortlach. It is made using a barley known as Golden Promise. Once upon a time, almost all Scotch was made using this grain, famous for its nutty flavor. As more hardy and higher yield grains were developed it fell out of favor. Benromach, which is owned by Gordon & MacPhail, resurrected it for this one-off bottling and we are most grateful that they did. Glen Grant is a distillery that is famed for its soft and light whisky. It is designed to be approachable for the beginner and just about flavorful enough to be enjoyed by the connoisseur.
